Off to the races, the soapbox races in Piedmont Park on June 9. The pit opens at 10 AM and the first race starts at high noon.

These fast and furious speedsters are combining both the love of speed and jumps with the creativity and innovation of artist. At the kickoff announcement the designs varied as some looked like shoes others like a can of beer and one even like a space craft.

What makes these contraptions go?  According to David Harman, team Truly Tremendous Tech Tower T, shared how they were going to design a soapbox on a Georgia Tech Tradition.  The one that revolves around stealing the T from the school’s Tech Tower and rolling down the hill and theirs will be created in the shape of a “T”.

The forty one participants that hail from eight states and compose of teams of five will set forth on the race of a lifetime.

The busy streets of Midtown will make way for the wildest legal street racing Atlanta has seen, and a new set of challenges awaits the teams. The Atlanta event will be the 12th U.S. Red Bull Soapbox Race to ever take place, with the first stateside race held in St. Louis in 2006. The global event dates back to 2000, when it first took place in Belgium, and has since visited almost 30 countries. Other stateside pit stops planned for 2012 include Red Bull Soapbox Race Texas, which is set to take place in Dallas on Sept. 15.
