Joey Huffman, one of our good friends and a great musician needs our help.   As many of you know, Joey is a contributor here on The Backstage Beat writing his great tales of his life on the road.  “Postcards from the Road” is filled with stories and humor that only Joey can bring you.

Joey was recently in a very serious car accident and The Backstage Beat is wanting to help as much as we can.  Atlanta is filled with musicians and music lovers and I am asking every one of you to help him out.

When I asked him what exactly happened, this is what he told me:

“I left Atlanta to drive to Kentucky for my mother’s viewing and funeral on Saturday, November 20. I had over slept and was in a hurry. I was very upset and distracted. You never expect it to happen to you. I was on I-75 heading north around Sweetwater, TN. I had just passed a car and neglected to look in my blind spot right away. I started to merge and then checked and saw that the truck that I was passing had sped up and I was about to hit it. I overcompensated jerking my wheel back to the left and then the right and I lost control. I clipped the back of the truck and that put me sideways. Then the car rolled three times. I don’t really remember the roll because I was knocked unconscious the first roll. I woke up upside down with my seatbelt on and turned off the ignition. I was pretty stunned. I thought that I had crawled out of the driver’s side window but a marine who had stopped to help said that he pulled me out the passenger’s side. I was bleeding from a massive lead laceration. I don’t remember much after that. I was taken to the UT medical center in a helicopter. They checked my neck and spine for injuries but they found nothing wrong but a concussion. I am Lucky to be alive. People have been injured much worse by far less of an accident. I was released from the hospital about 10:00pm. A good friend drove down from Pikeville drove down and carried me to KY so I could at least attend my mother’s funeral.

In an economy where everyone is struggling I was barely keeping myself afloat. That accident hit me hard. I was left without transportation. My piano was ejected from the car and destroyed leaving me without the tools of my trade. I had car insurance but I don’t have health insurance. Between the life flight (which was $16,000 alone), the radiologist, the doctor and hospital bill I owe over $20,000.00. I have to buy another piano and I have no money saved to do that. I had to buy another SUV to carry my equipment in. I can barely pay for that. I hate to ask for help. I feel like a beggar with my hat in my hand. But I have no choice.”
