The Backstage Beat and The Center for Puppetry Arts have been linked for over 5 years. What can we say? We love this amazing and talented puppeteers!
We had a chance to catch the new show, Peter Pan and we loved it! We sat down with the shows director, Amy Sweeney to learn more.
TBB: First off, we love the Center for Puppetry Arts. It is a very treasured place for me and my family. I started taking my kids there 5 years ago and we have valued it ever since. When we go it feels like we are seeing a few old friends. This time we saw Peter Pan and I must say I didn’t recognize the cast. Can you tell me a little about them? Are they new or just usually on other projects?
Amy: We have two performers in this show who have worked with us in the past, Luis Hernandez – who actually performed in this adaptation of Peter Pan when we first produced it in 2012 – and Lindsay Ricketson. The three other performers are new to the Center: Ashley Anderson, Matt Baum, and Tim Whitson. They have theatrical backgrounds including children’s and musical theatre. Here are all their bios.
Ashley Anderson (Tinkerbell/Tigerlily/Mrs. Darling) recently moved here from Ft. Myers, FL, where she was a part of Florida Repertory Theatre; she has since submerged herself into training; working as an aerialist, hand to hand acrobat, tumbler, and burlesquer with the Imperial OPA circus. Ashley recently finished her performance as Sally in the new work, Sally and Glen at the Palace Theatre with Out of Box Theatre in Marietta.
Matt Baum (Captain Hook/Mr. Darling/ Slightly)has delighted Atlanta audiences of all ages in a variety of productions ranging from Shakespeare to musical theatre. Recent credits include: Little Raindrop Songs at the Alliance, Lyle the Crocodile at Synchronicity, and Hound of the Baskervilles at ART Station. He is thrilled to make his Center for Puppetry Arts debut as Captain Hook!
Luis R. Hernandez (Smee/John) has been with the Center for 10 years! At the Center he has previously appeared in Shake a Tale Feather With Mother Goose, Peter Pan, SPACE!, Beauty & the Beast, Charlotte’s Web, Winnie the Pooh, The Adventures of Mighty Bug, Tales of Edgar Allan Poe, and in the title role of Don Quixote.
Lyndsay Ricketson (Wendy/Nibs) performed Hermey in last year’s production of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Her other credits around town include Pump Boys & Dinettes (Rhetta), Beauty and the Beast (Beauty), Shrek: the Musical (Peter Pan), Christmas Canteen 2013, Ragtime (Evelyn Nesbit), Sweeney Todd (Johanna Barker), and Little Women (Beth). Lyndsay received her B.A. in Musical Theater from Berry College.
Tim Whitson (Peter Pan/Michael) is a recent graduate from North Greenville University, where he met a beautiful woman, who is now his wife of 8 wonderful months. Past roles around town include Luigi in The Explorers Club, Admiral Boom (u/s/p) in Mary Poppins, and Boole (u/s) in Driving Miss Daisy, all at the Aurora Theatre.
